Service Dogs

A service dog is a dog that has been trained to perform tasks that help people with disabilities: 

 
    • Guiding: Helping people who are blind or have low vision 
       
    • Alerting: Helping people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind 
       
    • Pulling: Pulling a wheelchair 
       
    • Protecting: Alerting and protecting people who are having a seizure 
       
  • Reminding: Reminding people with mental illness to take prescribed medications 
     
  • Calming: Calming people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack 
     
  • Detecting allergens: Detecting and alerting to the odor of allergens, such as peanuts, gluten, or eggs 
     

Service dogs are working animals, not pets. They are not required to be registered or certified by the government. 

 

Here are some characteristics of a good service dog candidate: 

 
  • Calm, especially in unfamiliar settings
  • Alert, but not reactive
  • Willing to please
  • Able to learn and retain information
  • Capable of being socialized to many different situations and environments
  • Reliable in performing repetitive tasks
Under the ADA, service animals are allowed in most public places, including businesses, state and local government facilities, and nonprofit organizations. They must be under the control of their handler, usually by being leashed or harnessed. 

(Some of our policies, requirements, & training guidelines are not mandatory under Federal ADA Law, but are mandatory under company policy. Such as recertification, wearing of vest, etc.)
